Course Overview

The course is designed to enable students to produce evidence, which demonstrates the development of competencies appropriate to a teacher or trainer in the post-compulsory education sector.

Who The Course is for

This qualification is open to all new in service, pre service and pre employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The certificate is designed for those who are employed in a full teaching role having responsibility for learners throughout the learning process and engaging in teaching on a range of academic levels within their subject specialism.

Full Award trainees maybe either pre service (placement) or in service (contracted teaching) and will be expected to demonstrate the following:-

• Undertake diagnostic assessments with learners
• Develop schemes of work and curriculum programmes from national syllabi
• Develop resources for teaching, learning and assessment
• Deliver teaching and learning to a range of learners and programmes across a selection of academic levels
• Develop, implement and evaluate a range of assessment strategies to promote and test learning
• Evaluate learning programmes, resources and assessment both with learners and independently
• Give advice and guidance to learners

Under exceptional circumstances approved voluntary teaching placements in recognised local and supported teaching situations maybe accepted. The programme leads to QTLS status.

Course Content

The qualification is made up of six 20 credit modules.

Certificate in Education Trainees undertake 3 modules at level 1HE / 4NQF and 3 modules at level 2HE / 5NQF
PGCE Trainees undertake 3 modules at level 1HE/4NQF, 1 module at level 3HE/6NQF and 2 modules at Masters level 4HE/7NQF.

The part time programme is offered over two years with 3 modules in each year.

The qualification comprises the following study and activities.

• An initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and commencement of the Professional Development Portfolio
• Completion of the threshold award ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector’
• Module Two Aligning Teaching learning and Assessment
• Module Three: Teaching and Reflecting on own Practice; including 75 hrs of teaching practice / placement within a subject specialism and 4 hours of observed practice
• Module Four: Action Research
• Module Five: Professional Values and Inclusive Practice
• Module Six: Teaching and Reflecting on others’ Practice; including 75 hrs of teaching practice / placement within a subject specialism and 4 hours of observed practice
• You will need to spend up to 20 hours per week on course related activities during the programme: class contact, logged teaching, preparation for teaching, private reading, preparation for formative and summative assessment activities.
Students will be observed in their normal teaching or training, by approved workbased assessors of the University of Central Lancashire.

Entry Requirements

All Certificate in Education entrants / applicants must have the following:-

• A level 3 NQF qualification in their own subject specialism

• Have an appropriate level of education (5 GCSEs at C and above or equivalent is a minimum qualification, to include English)

• A teaching or training contract for a minimum of 150 hours of teaching over the course of the programme. Under exceptional circumstances a voluntary teaching placement may be acceptable for part time applicants.

· The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English.

All PGCE entrants / applicants must have the following:-

• A first degree or equivalent

• 5 GCSEs at C and above or equivalent is a minimum qualification, to include English

• A level 3 NQF qualification in their teaching subject specialism, if other than their degree

• A teaching or training contract for a minimum of 150 hours of teaching over the course of the programme. Under exceptional circumstances a voluntary teaching placement maybe acceptable for part time applicants.

· The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English.

West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Learning & Assessment Methods

You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. The University of Central Lancashire and an external examiner moderate each course.
There are three components of assessment:
• Written assignments. You will complete a variety of assignments including academic essays, case studies, presentations and observations of other teachers.

• A portfolio of 75 documented hours per year of teaching in your subject area.
• Four 1 hour teaching observations per year.

To be awarded the Cert Ed or PGCE, you must pass all three components.

Qualifications Gained

> Certificate in Education, in association with University of Central Lancashire

> Post Graduate Certificate in Education, in association with University of Central Lancashire.

Progression Opportunities

Undergraduate (Cert Ed) trainees will have 120 credits at undergraduate level and can progress onto Combined Honours programmes, BA in Education and CPD Framework at the University of Central Lancashire.

Post Graduate Certificate Students will have 40 credits at Masters level and can progress onto the Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice and the MEd as well as the Post Graduate CPD Framework.

Career Opportunities

This qualification will allow successful students to train and teach in Further Education Colleges, Higher Education Colleges, Evening Centres, Community Centres, Training Institutions and Workbased Training.
