Who The Course is for
This qualification is open to all new in service, pre service and pre employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The certificate is designed to cover the role of the Associate Teacher who will have limited responsibilities in terms of teaching as identified below:-
• Teaching from packs and pre-prepared materials, with reduced responsibility for curriculum design
• Teaching on short courses
• Someone whose main role is not that of teaching but delivers learning to others on more than an occasional basis
Course Content
The qualification is made up of two 20 credit modules at level 1HE (level 4 NQF) 40 credits in total
The qualification comprises the following study and activities
• An initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and commencement of the Professional Development Portfolio
• Completion of the threshold award ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector’
• You will need to spend up to 20 hours per week on course related activities during the programme: class contact, logged teaching, preparation for teaching, private reading, preparation for formative and summative assessment activities
• Teaching practice / placement for a minimum of 30 hours in your subject specialism during which you will be observed for a minimum of 3 hours. (observations must be satisfactory to achieve the award)
• Observation of other practitioners in subject area (4hrs)
Entry Requirements
Entrants / applicants must have the following:-
• A level 3 NQF qualification in their own subject specialism
• A level 2 NQF in literacy or equivalent. (GCSE English C and above)
· The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English.
Applicants who do not hold the level 2 in literacy or the equivalent can undertake a diagnostic test; satisfactory completion will allow access to the programme
• A contracted teaching placement for 30 hours of teaching over the course of the programme. (under exceptional circumstances voluntary teaching may be acceptable).
West lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
Learning & Assessment Methods
You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. The University of Central Lancashire and an external examiner moderate each course.
There are three components of assessment:
• Written assignments. You will complete a variety of assignments including academic essays, case studies, presentations and observations of other teachers.
• A portfolio of 30 documented hours of teaching in your subject area
• Three 1 hour teaching observations
To be awarded the CTLLS, you must pass all three components.
Is there any APL available?
APL of a maximum of 10 credits will be given to entrants who are holders of a threshold award ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector from any other awarding body providing it is at Level 1HE / 4NQF against the equivalent part of the Certificate programme.
Qualifications Gained
Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector ‘CTLLS’, in association with University of Central Lancashire.
West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
Progression Opportunities
If your role as a teacher changes and you begin to take on more responsibility for planning, delivering and assessing the teaching and learning process you will be able to progress onto an appropriate stage of the Full Award programme providing all other entry requirements are met. The Full Award requires trainees to undertake a minimum of 150 hours of teaching while on the programme and 30 of these can be carried across from this certificate leaving 120 hours to complete. The Full Award also requires trainees to be observed on 8 occasions and for a minimum of 8 hours. Two of the observations from the certificate can be carried into the full award leaving 6 satisfactory observations left to be achieved.
Career Opportunities
This qualification will allow successful students to train and teach in Further Education Colleges, Higher Education Colleges, Evening Centres, Community Centres, Training Institutions and Workbased Training.
