Course Overview
These courses are ideal if you'd like to further your sporting career whilst also studying for a nationally recognised, career-focussed qualification. It is recognised by employers and, if you'd like to keep studying, provides the entry qualification for a National Certificate or National Diploma course, subject to grades.

Who The Course is for
This course is for students who want to study an academic programme to broaden their specialist focus, either to prepare for employment or to progress to a higher level course.
Course Content
You will study:
* The sports industry
* Health, safety and injury
* Preparation for sport
* Practical sports
* Sport leadership skills
* The Body in Sport
Functional Skills will also form an important part of your course. They are the skills we use in all aspects of our study, work and everyday life. When you start the course, your tutor will discuss which Key Skills are the most appropriate for you from the following:
* Communication
* Application of number
All students must wear the college sports uniform, which is:
• Black/dark tracksuit bottoms (winter) and/or shorts (summer) (Purchased by student)
• College top (Purchased from the department)
• Suitable training shoes (Purchased by student)
• Students will be required to remove all visible jewellery including facial piercing joining all practical sessions (due to awarding body requirements) and have short nails.
Mobile phones must not be accessed in classrooms and salons unless permission has been sought from the course coordinator.
Through the course we expect a minimum of 95% attendance with 100% commitment.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 3 GCSE’s at Grade D or above. Candidate will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and we will be looking for an appropriate standard of English and maths. We are interested in your enthusiasm and commitment to succeed.
West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
Learning & Assessment Methods
Candidates must have an interest in health and fitness, with a view to working in the fitness industry. Candidates who are already employed in the industry may enrol on a work based learning NVQ programme.

The course can progress to a BTEC National Diploma in Sport.

This course could lead to employment in a sports centre, gymnasium or health club.

If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.
