Who The Course is for

This course provides a practical introduction to photography and will benefit those candidates who wish to learn about a range of photographic practices including working in a black & white darkroom, using cameras, digital photography and basic digital image manipulation.

Course Content

Candidates will learn how to use cameras and photographic processes to create a variety of images. A wide range of photographic techniques will be covered, including:
> Camera controls - aperture and shutter speed
> Composition
> Monochrome processing and printing
> The history and context of photography
> Digital imaging

Entry Requirements

While there are no formal entry requirements, candidates should be enthusiastic and keen to improve their photographic and researching skills.

West lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Learning & Assessment Methods

The course is assessed through two units: one of coursework and the other a response to an externally set theme. Each project consists of a practical assignment supported by research and underpinning knowledge.

Qualifications Gained

GCSE Art & Design (Photography).

Progression Opportunities

Progression onto AS Level Photography (4.5 hours per week for 30 weeks), or onto a BTEC National Diploma in Photography or Art & Design (full time programmes, typically four days a week).

Career Opportunities

There are a multitude of careers where a qualification in Photography is desirable. For example, you could work in one of a number of arts-based and creative fields, involving working as a Freelance or Corporate Photographer, working in publishing or production as well as in the fashion or film industry.
