Course Overview

This course consists of a range of Carpentry and Joinery units to give a good introduction to carpentry and joinery. The course will also address a range of health and safety issues related to your trade training.

Who The Course is for

This course is for school leavers and adults interested in a career in construction.

Successful students tend to:
• have practical skills and good hand skills
• be able to follow technical drawings, building plans, and other instructions
• be fit and strong enough to carry tools and materials

Course Content

• Health and Safety within the construction industry
• Stacking and storing materials and equipment
• The construction industry
• Produce basic woodworking joints
• Maintain hand tools
• Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
All elements are assessed and must meet Construction Awards Alliance standards.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but a reasonabhle standard of English and maths is expected, plus the enthusiasm and commitment to succeed. All students must display a positive attitude, be prepared to work as part of a team and have excellent attendance.

West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Learning & Assessment Methods

• Assessment is via multiple choice examination and practical tests
• Awarding body phase test
• Portfolio of knowledge

Qualifications Gained

Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery qualification (Construction Awards Alliance).

Progression Opportunities

Successful students may progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.

Career Opportunities

This course may allow students to gain employment within the construction industry.
This course may allow students to move on to an apprenticeship.
