Who The Course is for
The Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Health, Social Care & Early Years is ideal for anyone who wishes to enter a health or social care related profession or progress to higher education in a health or social care related field e.g. nursing, social work, midwifery or paramedic.

Course Content
Students will study 8 compulsory units:
• Developing Effective Communication in Health & Social Care
• Equality, Diversity & Rights in Health & Social Care
• Health, Safety & Security in Health & Social Care
• Development through the Life Stages
• Anatomy & Physiology for Health & Social Care
• Sociology Perspectives for Health & Social Care
• Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care
• Psychological Perspectives for Health & Social Care
PLUS a range of specialist units on topics such as:
• Working in the Social Care Sector
• Working in the Health Sector
• Promoting Health Education
• Nutrition for Health and Social Care
• Introduction to Counselling in a Health & Social Care Context
• Dealing with Challenging Behaviour
• Health Psychology
• Applied Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care
• Public Health
• Caring for Individuals with Additional Needs
Functional skills in English and Maths will also be studied as an integral part of the course.
There will be a period of compulsory work experience within this qualification.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, (preferably including English and /or maths); or a First Diploma at a merit or distinction in a related subject or other appropriate Level 2 qualification. Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and we will be looking for an appropriate standard of English and maths. We are interested in your enthusiasm and commitment to succeed.
You may be required to obtain a satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Check and two references (one of which needs to be from your school).
West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
Learning & Assessment Methods
All units will be assessed by internally set assignments. There are no examinations. Candidates must achieve a minimum of a pass grade in all of the units.
Qualifications Gained
Edexcel Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care (equal to 3 A Levels grade A-E).

Successful students can progress onto a relevant Higher Education course.
If you successfully complete a level 3 course at West Lancashire College we will offer you a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).
Career Opportunities
Students with a Level 3 Diploma / Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care have access to a wide range of career opportunities including a Foundation Degree or Higher Level study to become a Nurse, Social Worker, Midwife or Paramedic.

If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.
