Course Overview

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design is a practical , career-focused course. You will learn by doing a series of Art & Design projects, you will also study functional skills at an appropriate level, plus a supporting GCSE in photography.

Who The Course is for

This course is for anyone who wishes to gain a vocational qualification in Art & Design. It is ideal if you are straight from school or have been out of education for a while and is particularly suitable if you don’t have many qualifications but want to progress your career.

Successful students tend to have:

• an understanding of design
• a passion for self expression

A certain level of manual dexterity will be required for Art and Design courses.

Course Content

Students will study a number of units over the course of the year, these units will introduce them to a number of specialist areas within art and design.

These specialist areas may include:
• Animation
• Drawing and painting
• Graphics
• Multi-media
• Photography
• Print-making
• 3D design
• Textiles and fashion

During the latter part of the course you will be able to specialise in one of your favourite subject areas.

Students will be able to undertake an additional GCSE level course in Photography.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above. Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and we will be looking for an appropriate standard of English and maths. We are interested in your enthusiasm and commitment to succeed.

West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Learning & Assessment Methods

All units are assessed graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit or Distinction).

Progression Opportunities

This course will enable you to progress to higher-level programmes such as the Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design or Photography.

Career Opportunities

This course aims to help students gain employment in the art and design industry at a junior level.

Course Costs

If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.

*exam and registration fees will be paid by the college subject to satisfactory attendance and course completion.

There is a studio fee of £75 per year levied with this course, payable within the first half term. This fee includes coach/train fare for three educational visits to galleries and relevant events, plus the use of a wide variety of specialist art consumables. A residential trip in the Spring term, typically for three days, to a European capital city is also planned at an additional cost of £150-£240.
