Course Overview

The BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design is designed to develop your personal creative skills to university entry standard. Our Level 3 Diploma is equivalent to two ‘A’ levels and students will study an additional art subject at AS level each year to support their full-time programme. Students will also undertake functional skills qualification(at the appropriate level).

Who The Course is for

This course is for anyone who wishes to gain a vocational qualification in Art & Design as a step towards a career in the industry or a university application. It is ideal if you are straight from school or are a mature student with relevant qualifications or experience.

Course Content

Students will study twelve modules over the course of two years, these modules will include a variety of core and specialist units. During the course students will work in a number of art and design specialisms, which will include:

• Drawing and painting
• Fashion and textiles
• Fine Art
• 3D design and sculpture
• Computers and digital photography
• Print-making

During the second year of the course students are able to specialise in their chosen subject areas.

A certain level of manual dexterity will be required for art and design courses.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English), preferably a Grade B in an art related subject and / or a Level 2 Diploma in a related subject. Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and we will be looking for an appropriate standard of English and maths. We are interested in your enthusiasm and commitment to succeed.

West Lancashire College will also accept credits previously gained through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Learning & Assessment Methods

This is a practical course, assessment is based entirely on course-work produced in art studios. All units are graded individually and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit or Distinction).

Qualifications Gained

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design (1,2 or 3 'A' Level equivalent), plus an additional AS/A2 in an art related subject.
Functional Skills.
Tutorial & Enrichment Studies.

Progression Opportunities

This course will enable you to progress to higher-level studies at university or to gain employment in the Art & Design industry.

If you successfully complete a level 3 course at West Lancashire College we will offer you a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).

Career Opportunities

Students may gain employment in the art and design industry.

Course Costs

If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.

*exam and registration fees will be paid by the college subject to satisfactory attendance and course completion.

There is a studio fee of £75 per year levied with this course, payable within the first half term. This fee includes coach/train fare for three educational visits to galleries and relevant events, plus the use of a wide variety of specialist art consumables. A residential trip in the Spring term, typically for three days, to a European capital city is also planned at an additional cost of £150-£240.
