For one Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College Nail Serivces NVQ Level 3 learner, Helen Murray, exciting times lie ahead as she will be competing in the UK World Skills Advanced Nails Technique final at Derby College held on 26 June.

Having already finished second in the regional competition held earlier this year in Birmingham, Helen is hoping to put her creativity and technique to the test in Derby to try and take the national title of UK World Skills Advanced Nails Technique winner 2010. Not only will this be a great personal accolade and achievement for Helen, it will also give her a chance at competing in the Worldwide based competition to be held later this year should she be placed amongst the winners.

The long journey to the final for the 29 year old mother began months back in the Nail Technician studio at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College’s Westbank campus, in which a class competition, judged by Hair & Beauty tutors, and Helen’s Nail Services tutor, Lisa McKenna would allow the winner to compete in the regional competition for the UK World Skills Advanced Nails Technique.

Nail Services tutor Lisa, commented “Helen demonstrated her technique and ability to produce even and smooth nails, well balanced with a crisp white and pink high shine finish which deservedly won the competition”.

After advancing to the regional competition, Helen had to demonstrate her ability to judges from the Nail Services industry and managed a second placed finish with a score of 67.5 out of 90 and thus allowing her to progress to the final. “I’m really nervous for the national competition, although just getting this far has been amazing and it’s worked wonders for my confidence. I’m delighted to be representing the college in the final and anything that happens in the nationals is just an added bonus”.

Upon reflecting on Helen’s achievements, tutor Lisa commented “I’m absolutely delighted for Helen and I’m very proud to see her confidence grow throughout the year, I hope she can continue her successful journey at the national final.”

The college would like to wish Helen the best of luck for her final. For further information on Nail Services courses at Skelmersdale College please contact course enquiries – 01695 52300 or visit the college website – www.skelmersdale.ac.uk
