Three Nail Services NVQ Level 3 learners at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College have very exciting and exotic times ahead.
Vicki Quane, 22, Jessica Maher, 19 and Georgina Lee, 18 have all cemented positions working as Nail Technicians onboard one of the world famous Steiner cruise ships. Having all taken different routes to studying their Level 3 course at the college, the three learners have certainly taken similar steps in what Vicki Quane describes as a “dream career”. Vicky commented “I went to university and decided that it wasn’t for me and initially thought about going into teaching, however, I heard about the Nail Services course at the college and thought this would allow me to do something more creative. I’ve always wanted to work on a cruise ship but I always thought I would be working behind the one of the bars but as soon as I saw the posters around the Hair & Beauty department at college advertising for Nail Technicians onboard Steiner it was the chance to make a dream come true”.
It’s a similar story for classmates Jessica and Georgina who also applied for positions aboard ship for the cruise operator. Georgina, who had previously studied Beauty Therapy at the college before specialising in Nail Services explained “I’ve always been interested in Beauty therapies, especially Nail Services and coming to the college to do my level 3 has given me the opportunity to travel the world whilst doing what I love”.
Jessica, who had progressed from the level 2 Nail Services course was initially considering opening her own salon but when the opportunity arose for her to apply to work on the cruise ship and travel the world her decision was instantly made. “I wanted to open my own salon after finishing my course, but the possible opportunity to work whilst travelling the world was something I wanted to go for immediately. The Nail Services course has given me an opportunity to progress in the Nail industry and allowed me this great opportunity that are not necessarily available in other industries”.
All three learners will be attending a months training in September with Steiner before setting sea on different cruise ships, porting in locations across the world such as USA, Bahamas, Mexico and Jamaica in late October.
Course tutor, Lisa McKenna commented “I’m very proud of the girls and excited for the future ahead of them. This is just the beginning for them and they have an exciting journey ahead of them. I just hope they bring me back something nice!”
