Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College’s Susan Walters has recently become one of only a handful of female forklift truck instructors in the UK!

Susan, who is a NVQ assessor for Storage & Warehousing, PMO, Spectator Safety, Plant Operations, Team Leading & Management, Customer Service and Retail, has been a member of the college’s Business Solutions team since November.

Having already been licensed to operate a forklift truck for over 6 years, Susan decided to take what she described as the ‘next step’ in undergoing an instructors’ course. Susan explained, “I’ve always been interested in forklift trucks and I’ve held my operator’s license for over 6 years, I just wanted to take the next step and become an instructor”. Susan did just this and passed the course with almost 100%.

Currently, forklift truck operation is a predominantly male orientated area within the workplace, and something Susan would like to open the eyes of to females across the area on the back of her own success. “Forklift truck jobs in general have been very much male orientated but hopefully now more females will have the confidence to train and gain their FLT licence”.

In line with Susan’s success, the college is now operating forklift truck training in their new accredited centre, based at Skelmersdale’s Westbank Campus. With Susan on board, and other members of the Business Solutions team, both male and female instructors will be offering excellent delivery of Forklift Truck, Reach & Counterbalance training.
