As part of their final assessment, Level 3 Hairdressers at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College have recently held an Avante Garde themed hair show based in the Phoenix Theatre at the college’s Westbank Campus.
The learners were responsible for arranging every aspect of the show from poster advertising, ticketing, catering and organising both the salons and venue for the event, whilst level 1 hairdressing learner Gavin Fuller contributed to the creativity of the event by greeting the public to the show in character, none other than Willy Wonka.
Judged by a panel of 3 college hairdressing experts, Janet Watson (Modern Apprenticeship tutor), Alison Barford (college tutor) and Emma Lyons (Salon Manager and assessor), the learners were set with the task of using their creativity to a maximum to fulfil the Avante Garde theme.
Over 5 hours of creative styling was endured by the competition entrants in order to try and claim the all important winning title. After deliberation, the judges concluded that Amanda Mackin and her ‘Lady of the Night’ creation merited third place, whilst Joanne Gibbons with her ‘Waste Not Want Not’ finished runner up. The winner on the night though was somewhat memorable of the winter that has just passed, in which Jade Lawrence wowed both the judges and audience alike with her chilling ‘Jack Frost’ character.
Course leader, Anne Oldham commented “This was a student event that was completely organised by the learners and monitored by the tutors, the quality of the work and commitment of each and every one learner was absolutely brilliant – I’m proud to say I am their course leader. The whole event was a success and I hope it allowed the learners to gain extra confidence and knowledge for when they progress”.
