College marks start of construction for £42.8m college
Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College were recently joined by key partners to celebrate the beginning of the construction work which will transform the town centre site at Northway, adjacent to where the main college campus once stood, into a top class building fit for the 21st century.
Members of the college management team and Newcastle College Group were joined by key partners who have supported the college in securing the development of the new college: Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive North West Development Agency, Rosie Cooper, MP for West Lancashire, Ian Grant, Leader of the Council, Les Abernethy, Deputy Chief Executive West Lancashire Borough Council and Adrian Owens, Deputy Leader of the Council. The contractors and consultants who have worked closely with the college on the development were also present: Gordon Flint, Project Manager BAM Construction and Alan Whitfield, Project Manager EC Harris.
Louise Dawson, Principal at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College, commented “Over the last two years staff and key partners have worked extremely hard to secure the development of this amazing new facility. The facilities in the new campus will help to improve the lives of learners, inspire local people to learn and develop and help to regenerate the local communities. We are already an outstanding college with success rates in the top 25% of colleges nationally and these new facilities can only help to improve our college even further.
I am delighted to reach the construction stage of the project and very much look forward to opening the doors to learners in September 2011.”
Gordon Flint, Project Manager BAM Construction added “BAM is delighted to commence work for the college. We look forward to delivering first rate new facilities in a considerate manner, and to forming an effective partnership with the college and the local community.”
