MBE Anjum Anwar has recently attended Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College as a guest speaker to BTEC Child Care, Learning and Development students as part of their ‘Modern Beliefs & Religions’ module. Anjum spoke about Islam, living life as a Muslim woman in modern society and the many different views and perspectives of religion.
In 2007 Anjum made history as she was appointed the first Muslim to be appointed to the Church of England’s staff. As well as her appointment in the Church of England, Anjum has been responsible for running a partnership project called ‘Understanding Islam’ between the Lancashire Council of Mosques and the Lancashire County Council’s LEA.
The students at the college have studied equality, diversity and rights and the presence of Anjum has given them a real insight into different perspectives of religion. Andrea Bowra, Child Care tutor commented “’It is important for students to have an understanding of different religions which are practised in our society. Anjum gave a really interesting and open talk on her and others perspectives on religion. The knowledge the students have gained will be of benefit to them when they are working with children in their future careers.”
